The Superfood – Coconut Oil

As you may know Coconut, is the king of all foods with various health and beauty benefits. But here we will concentrate on its benefits for hair growth. It can be taken both internally and externally.

Lesser known facts about coconut oil and your hair according to coconutoil.com article are:

"When compared to mineral oil and sunflower oil, coconut oil was the least one that caused protein loss for both damaged and healthy hair.

Furthermore coconut oil was used both as a pre-wash or post-wash, but considering its hydrophobic properties the pre-wash achieved the best results. This is because coconut oil repels water, preventing it from entering in the strands, causing the cuticle to rise, making it prone to damage and breakage".

A small amount of the pre-wash treatment penetrates deeper into the hair shaft.

Coconut oil is also able to defrizz hair in humid conditions due to its water-repelling properties! And many rave about this. From my own experience with coconut oil to manage frizz it is nothing to go crazy about – but then I did not use an extra virgin coconut oil either.

According to a Journal of Cosmetic Science study:

"Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft."

Coconut oil is of particular importance for those with more porous hair types like African and chemically treated hair.

The featured article on coconutoil.com includes a couple of videos demonstrating how some people are using coconut oil for hair care.

4. Myths of hair growth

Trimming your hair frequently makes it grow longer/faster
While it's mandatory to cut off split or dead ends in time, frequently trimming won't your hair grow longer or faster. Your hair grows about half an inch every month, whether you trim it or not! Trimming keeps your hair healthy

Old Wives Wisdom

There seems to be common consensus on the internet that braiding your hair at night will help it to grow longer. But it is recognized that gently twisting, massaging and braiding all help stimulate the hair follicle, causing hair to ‘wake up’ and grow. If nothing it helps reduce friction as compared to loose hair. But then you still have ample space for fibers from the pillowcase. So if you fancy braiding your hair either cover it in a silk scarf or tie it in a loose bun over your head at night.

6. Drink tea and grow long hair

…..some more solutions that can work for you

In my research on How to Grow Long Hair for this article, I came across this in a popular women forum. A tea from Back to Basics Log Cabin got me curious and contacted them. This is what they replied:

".....it contains specific herbs that contain silica and vitamin b's so this is not only good for hair, but for nails, skin and bones too! Where we live we have a factory that produces a chemical called C8 that affects peoples thyroids, so we have a higher incidence of women in particular losing lots of hair. They have been finding a cup of our tea a day helps to first: prevent further hair loss after approximately the first month and then second: starts the regrowth pattern.

For people that want to grow longer hair before a wedding or would like it to be shinier, I recommend our tea in order to replace vitamins you may be short on in your body. If you have a ready supply, along with a little sunshine, your hair will grow at optimum levels:)"
